For profit firms have a major domination on capitalist economies. But such a rivalry approach makes a stress over public processes. The competition is among ideas and approaches. Disagreements are not necessarily put away, The process moves on.
Advancing technology is both business and professional competition.
Some industries, like science-based industries are heavily dependent on universities. Because universities provide the technical people and ideas about product and process to the industry. Since this is a dynamic not static process, we can see university effect more dense at the first years of an industry, by the time it looses effect over industry. (because of the speed)
For example in computer sciences or genetic engineering, industry look university for new knowledge and techniques as well as training. Many academician is interested in industrial practices. And there are links with university scientists and laboratories. But in physics, academic research is only a few relevant to the industry.
On the other hand, in fields like biochemistry, and electrical engineering, academics often come up with patentable inventions.
